Natural Treatments for Depression and Anxiety, as well as PTSD and OCD

An integrative, holistic, and natural approach to mental health.

A 37-year-old female came into my office and sat down across from me, a tissue clenched in her hands. She began to describe her depression, which began several years ago with the passing of her father. She had a hard time going to work in the mornings, and stated that she had no motivation to go out and spend time with her friends. She had tried mood enhancing herbs, counseling, and pharmaceutical medications but reported that at the best, she was left feeling numb. She no longer had a zest for life and was starting to lose hope of ever feeling better. She laughed a little while telling me this, holding back her tears.  She came to my office looking for natural treatments for anxiety and depression. I took her homeopathic case, and gave her homeopathic remedy Natrum Muriaticum, and asked her to come back in 1 month. A month later when she returned for her follow up, her eyes were bright and I saw her smile for the first time. She said that she felt more like herself, that her depression was improving and that for the first time in years she felt like she could really get better.

Natural Antidepressants: What Works and What Doesn’t

This is one of many patients that have had success with homeopathic treatment for mental health. With continued interest and pull towards natural alternatives in medicine for treatment of a variety of conditions, including mental health, the research community has jumped on board. Among the latest of scientific studies, are those evaluating the efficacy of homeopathic treatment in mental health.

Authors Adler AT et al did a double blind randomized study evaluating the effectiveness of homeopathy as compared to Prozac. Their findings revealed that not only did patients taking Prozac experience unwanted side effects, while patients taking homeopathic medicines did not, but Prozac was not more effective than homeopathy in reducing moderate to severe depression (1). An animal study published by Prabhu et al researched homeopathic Pulsatilla versus a benzodiazepine in treatment of anxiety. Their results were that the anxiolytic effects of generically prescribed homeopathic pulsatilla is equivalent to a standard anxiolytic pharmaceutical drug (2).

Homeopathic medicine is especially effective when it is prescribed by a practiced and highly trained homeopathic physician who takes the time to look at your individual symptoms and selects from the hundreds of available remedies, one for your particular needs.

Unfortunately, because homeopathic remedies are available over the counter it isn’t unusual to see individuals self-diagnosing. Often times an inadequate diagnosis leads to failure, and the individual blames the remedy instead of their own faulty diagnosis. Homeopathic remedies are most effective when the true cause of symptoms is uncovered by a skilled professional. Not every case of depression is caused by the same underlying causes, and no single remedy can be prescribed for every case. Is homeopathy the best natural remedy for depression? That depends on you!
