Pesticides are put on your food to keep insects off. If the pesticides are killing bugs, imagine how toxic they can be in your body. Buying organic is always best. However, I get it, it can get costly buying everything organic. If you are on a budget, here’s how to know what you MUST buy organic, versus what you can save on by buying non-organic.
My number one rule of thumb when it comes to eating fruits and veggies is to pay attention to the Environmental Working Group’s “Clean Fifteen” and the “Dirty Dozen”.
These refer to foods that have higher or lower amounts of pesticides sprayed on fruits and veggies.
There was a scientific study that was done by a little girl for a school project. She had two cups of water, one had clear drinking water and the other one had red food coloring. A piece of lettuce was placed in each cup and then she observed what happened.
Just like flowers will absorb water out of a vase, the lettuce absorbed the water out of the cup. What she observed, was the lettuce placed in clear water looked normal, while the other piece of lettuce absorbed the water that was red. You could see the red inside the lettuce.
The interesting part is, when she went to wash the red lettuce, the water did not wash off the color. We know that when we spray our foods with pesticides, you can’t just wash them off. The pesticides get integrated into the food that you are eating
The “Dirty Dozen” has a reference list of the top 12 most sprayed foods, the ones you really need to watch out for.
Remember the list when it comes to buying produce. Any foods that are on the “Dirty Dozen” list should be bought organic.
